The first of Don Miguel Ruiz's agreements is 'Be Impeccable with Your Word'. I wonder how many times you are able to honour this agreement with yourself? What do you understand by this agreement? The intention is beautifully simple, as is everything in this wonderful little book.
Saying only what you mean can be challenging when you might work in an environment where certain levels of diplomacy are required. Or you may have relationships with people where you are not able to say what you mean. I wonder how easy it is for you to avoid using words to speak against yourself or to speak badly of others. Consider conversations you have had today, yesterday, last week. What do you notice?
What do you notice about times when you use your words in the direction of truth and love? What is different?
Your word is a true manifestation of who you really are. People judge us and form opinions based on the words that we use, the tone we deliver them with and the intentions. You should be aware when your ego is influencing the words you use. Remember the distinction between being right and doing what is right. Many organisations and relationships get into trouble because people are unable to make this distinction. Scrutinise your words carefully. If you were hearing them from somebody else, how you would you receive them? What would you think? How could you convey your message in a way that delivers your message with integrity to yourself.
Remember that everybody has an opinion and the only one that really matters is your own. What anybody else thinks about you is none of your business. If somebody expresses an opinion and you believe it, it then becomes part of your belief system. Remember also that the only thing that can break this agreement is your own decision to speak your truth. Truth has all the power to set you free.
