Fun and Recreation

August 27, 2008 17:15 by Chris Smith

Well this really should be the easy bit shouldn't it?  If you have scored yourself really high in this category, I commend you and encourage you to keep on keeping on.........provided of course it is not conflicting with Health and Well-Being or with Career.  Many of my clients score themselves pretty low in the category.   It is a predictable outcome of a heavy workload, demanding job or a strong Jung or MBTI 'J' preference which means for some their ethic around fun and recreation is all about getting everything done, and then if there is any time left, we can have some fun!

What does fun and recreation mean to you right now?  What do you do just for fun?  What kind of recreational activities do you get involved in?  What would you like to get involved in?

You see, in my experience, if you build in some regular F&R time, you will notice an improvement in your levels of motivation and creativity.

Action  Let's get a plan in place for some fun and recreation that starts with some thinking or daydreaming?  Print this out and then answer the following questions:-

  • How much leisure time do I have each week?
  • How much would I LIKE to have each week?
  • When could I plan that in?
  • When WILL I plan this in?
  • What do I need to do to make sure this happens?
  • What am I prepared to try out?
  • Who else could I get involved?
  • What did I enjoy doing and have since stopped?
  • What are my top 3 ideas for finding fun and recreation?
  • Which of these will I do first?

I wonder what would give you the most joy and opportunity to showcase your creative expression?  Do you like singing, dancing, sculpting, painting, running, swimming, collecting, wine tasting, cooking?  Find something that you can 'get lost in' for at least a couple of hours each week.  You might want to do this alone or get with a group of people who share common interests.

Fun and Recreation does not have to cost an arm and a leg either.  What could you do in the home, as an individual, a couple or as a family?

How do you measure the satisfaction from your fun and recreation?  Remember that having a great time whilst you are healthy, fit and mobile is gift to be explored and living a life of few or no regrets is about taking chances and trying out new things, just because you can.  It is every bit as important as each of the other 7 categories to ensure that you have a rounded and fulfilled existence.
