Planning Your Week

June 9, 2008 19:43 by Chris Smith

How has your week started out?  Has it been a typical Monday and have you achieved what you set out to do today?  If the answer is no, what got in the way?  Even if you are reading this on Tuesday morning, you can take a few minutes to reflect on what actually happened and how that measures up against expectations.  Are you a list maker?  Do you have a 'To Do List' and do you review it at the start and end of each day.  If not, test it out over the next 4 days and see what kind of results you get.  If it works, keep doing it.  If it doesn't then do something else.

Sunday afternoon/early evening is a great time to project your mind over the week ahead and to decide what you are going to achieve that will be of most benefit to you. If you work for somebody, then chances are that some of the things on the list will be dictated externally.  Why not experiment with segmenting out the work related stuff and then the stuff that is going to move you forward personally.  Make some space for playtime and fun as well.

Once you have a view of what did not get taken care of today, ask yourself if it was really important in the first place.  Is it more or less important now?  Is it urgent or did you put a lot of effort into something that did not require quite so much focus?  What else could you have done with your time?  More importantly now, roll over the important things that did not get taken care of today and prioritise them for action tomorrow, or the next day. Ask yourself the question "for what purpose am I doing this?" Tackle the tough stuff first and free up your energy.  If you feel swamped by the amount of things you have to do, drop something off the list.  You can decide what really needs your attention  Get into the habit of reviewing your successes and challenges and learning from them.  What can you take from today that will make tomorrow easier or more effective?  If the going really gets tough and you feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of things to do, do nothing for a while and create some space around you.  You will see things differently when you go back to them.
