The Four Agreements

October 21, 2008 18:14 by Chris Smith

If you have never come across the book by the same title by Don Miguel Ruiz, I urge you to pick up a copy.  I first picked this up about 4 years ago.  Don Miguel Ruiz was a much publicised author by Oprah Winfrey after appearing on one of her TV shows in the US.

The next four blogs are going to cover each of the four agreements.  These are:

  1. Be Impeccable with Your Word
  2. Don't Take Anything Personally
  3. Don't Make Assumptions
  4. Always Do Your Best

I love the book for its' simplicity and thought provoking messages. Don Miguel Ruiz challenges your thinking in a way that perhaps has never been challenged before.  The book encourages you to 'wake up' from the dream that you are living in.  Just imagine for one moment that everything you think to be real, is really just an illusion that you have created and your ancestors have created.  You have created a little reference book in your mind that determines what is right and what is wrong.  This is the mechanism by which you determine what is real or imagined.  Yet, if you are prepared to suspend that rule book, you are likely to see things in a whole different way.

A friend of mine who died some years ago, once said to me during the last weeks of his life "If you could see the world through other people's eye's you wouldn't recognise the place you are in".  I have often reflected on that and it has given me a great deal of insight when I have needed to see different vantage points.  The very nature of coaching demands that of me.  The Four Agreements is a real gem of a book and I hope the next 4 days will whet your appetite and provide you with some useful tools for your own, success, personal freedom and true happiness.
