If you manage people or want to improve your communication skills an essential book to have in your personal development library is Shelle Rose Charvet's 'Words That Change Minds'. This book is a masterpiece in understanding Meta Models. This book uses a framework called the Language and Behaviour Profile or LAB profile for short. The LAB profile covers both motivation traits and working traits. The LAB profile framework is often used in interviews to elicit valuable information about candidates behavioural preferences.
Consider how useful it would be to know if somebody is pro-active or reactive. Are they motivated by the consequences of not doing something or are they goal orientated? Some people prefer lots of options whereas others prefer procedures. When you next speak to somebody, ask them where they went on holiday last year and why? There are people who go to the same place every year because they like it and it is familiar. Some of us like to try somewhere new each year and then of course some people like to try out new places and go back to the same ones occasionally. This tells you if people prefer sameness, difference or sameness with some difference.
Some people like to look at the 'bigger picture' whilst others prefer to get into the detail. You can become a far more powerful communicator when you tailor your language to-wards people's natural preferences and the way they like to do things. I use this framework when I work with small to medium sized companies who are hiring new staff or want to evaluate the people they already have in their organisations. Ramp up your communication skills and start embracing the tools used by powerful communicators. Get better results by using words that change minds.
