Isn't it great to know that as human beings we have a natural tendency and desire to progress and to constantly be productive in some way? Have you noticed that on some days you can get so much done and on others, well, it just seems difficult? During my time working in corporate life and as a coach, I have both participated in, and facilitated, various time management programmes. I always took something away that I considered to be valuable from each of them. Organising tasks into categories of importance certainly helped, in fact the whole planning process was the key to getting to the end of the week and achieving what I actually set out to achieve at the beginning of it.
The truth is time management is not really about time at all, it is about making choices. You can make choices that will move you closer to where you want to be or you can make choices that will send you off in a different direction and not necessarily take you to your goal achievement. Often well intentioned project managers plan in man hours for various activities to complete projects. They sometimes wrongly assume that assigning 6 hours to a human resource in a day will produce a predictable result, often overlooking that out of those 6 hours, perhaps only 2 of them will actually be truly productive.
When is your most productive hour of the day? What do you notice? When are your energy levels at their best? When do you have un-interrupted thinking time without distractions? Where do you do your best thinking? What environmental conditions need to be present? I wonder if you are more productive during the day if you punctuate your working time with interludes of creativity or relaxation. Now you have some answers to these questions, make your most productive hour of the day work for you every day. What do you need to change? When NOW would be a great time to do that?
